We also have an abundance of fresh roasted organic and fair trade coffees, packaged and ready to take home to enjoy. I think I went a little crazy when packaging yesterday so the shelves are over-flowing with whole bean coffees.
Just a few updates today. We'll have a new selection of the beautiful pottery from Mexico arriving in another week. In addition to the cups, saucers and serving platters we already stock, we'll be adding some larger serving platters.
The new Travel Presses and Espro Presses have turned out to be very popular. They're a great improvement over standard French Press coffee makers and their design is stunning. A perfect gift for yourself or someone special.
Our new logo travel mugs should be here in another week as well so we're looking forward to their arrival.
Now that we're officially into the "Holiday Season", I have a couple schedule changes to let everyone know about.
This is the final week for supporting The Coffee Trust Program's effort to raise funds for the training of Guatemalan coffee farmers in organic solutions to the La Roya epidemic in Central America. Look for the donation jar when you're in the shop.
I had intended to add a donation button to our web site for this project but haven't made that happen yet. Look for it next week.

When typing the subject line, I couldn't believe Thanksgiving is upon us. Seems like August was last week.
But alas, back to reality.
The Travel Presses and Espro Presses arrived this week and are beautiful! Both are elegantly designed, utilizing a micro-filter system to yield a sediment-free cup and double-wall stainless steel construction assuring hours of hot coffee.
To be quite honest, I've never been a huge fan of the French Press. I loved the taste of the first cup but subsequent cups were always cold and lackluster
(I prefer my coffee hot).
The Travel Presses and Espro Presses solve this issue with their double-wall, vacuum insulated stainless steel, and will keep one's coffee hot for hours. And the double micro-filter assures a grit-free cup of coffee. These were voted Best New Coffee Product for 2015 by the Specialty Coffee Association of America.
Check them out when you're in the shop next time. They'd make the perfect gift, either for yourself or someone special. Travel Presses are available in black, red, and brushed stainless steel. Espro Presses are available in 18 oz. and 32 oz. sizes in brushed stainless steel.
Another variety of travel mug was ordered yesterday featuring our logo. They're also constructed of stainless steel and are sleek enough to fit anyone's hand and vehicle's cup holder. They should arrive in about 2 weeks.
And, we've added a few new art pieces to our offerings. Local photographer/artist Athena Salvador creates art pieces with her photographs that are both beautiful and functional. We have two of her pieces incorporating her photographs mounted on glass which can be used as cutting surfaces and displayed when not in use. We also have some of her market bags incorporating her images of the St. Johns Bridge.
New coffees arrived this week. It was our largest shipment ever and several of the coffees were "staples" to replenish our supplies but there are also some notable standouts.
We received more of the incredibly delicious Ethiopian Yirgacheffe as well as the Ethiopian Sidamo, neither of which we ever seem to have enough.
The Yirgacheffe is a washed coffee, light roasted and full of complexity. Offering a softly fragrant aroma, these coffee beans have a subtle floral scent and a satisfyingly intensified finish that would leave any coffee drinker's palate wanting more. I prefer this coffee brewed as a pour-over.
Processed through the wet-processing method, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe's beans are fermented for over 72 hours after having their fruit and pulp removed by the use of natural enzymes. This process allows the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe to absorb the sugars in the coffee fruit.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee beans are known for having a warm zing, which makes this coffee bean distinctive enough to rank as one of the finest. However, what makes this African coffee bean stand out is its resonant finish – a highly-flavored mix that does not overpower with an earthy taste.
By contrast, the Sidamo is a dry-processed, medium roasted coffee which yields a fuller body and depths of blueberry notes, chocolate and spice with a wine like essence and a clean finish.
Grown in the Sidamo province of Ethiopia, our Ethiopia Sidamo is an Arabica bean varietal that has been certified Organic and Fair-Trade. Hand harvested and dry processed, this coffee has a very unique flavor profile that you will thoroughly enjoy. This is one coffee that I believe lends itself to the French Press brewing method.
And last but certainly not least is the new coffee from Java. Java Taman Dadar is sourced from family-owned farms located near the villages of Curah Tatal and Kayumas on the island of Java, Indonesia. In the 17th Century Java coffee was first cultivated in low lying areas, but by the late 19th Century coffee leaf rust had destroyed production, forcing new coffee cultivation into the highlands where high altitudes and volcanic soil provide perfect growing conditions. Smallholder organic coffee production is atypical of the region which is dominated by large government run coffee estates established by the Dutch in the 18th century. Taman Dadar, meaning flower garden, aptly describes the way smallholder coffee is cultivated, colorfully inter-cropped with parkia beans, avocados, erythrina, albizia, and leucaena trees, which produce food for local consumption and shade. Java Taman Dadar is wet-hulled, a uniquely Indonesian processing method in which the coffee parchment is removed before the final drying is completed, producing a hallmark Indonesian flavor.
The Java Taman Dadar is roasted a bit darker to bring out the chocolate and smokey notes and works well brewed either as a pour-over, drip or French Press. I purchased the Java to replace the Timor and, I hesitate to say this but I think it's even better! I just made a cup for myself and wow! The Java is more complex, still with a prominent chocolate note but with accompanied by some spiciness and subtle fruit notes.
As noted in the description of the Java Taman Dadar, is the mention of the leaf rust blight, going all the way back to the 19th Century. For coffee growers in Central America, it has risen it's ugly head within the past couple years and has wreaked havoc on coffee crops and the farmers' lives.
Please consider making a contribution to The Coffee Trust's program to help train coffee farmers in Guatemala in organic methods to combat this problem. There is a jar adjacent to the cash register in the shop where donations may be left. This program runs through the end of November so please contribute whatever you're comfortable donating.

Several weeks ago I mentioned we would be reverting to our original Saturday hours for the winter, opening at 8 am instead of 7 am. However, as a trial, we arrived and prepared to be open at 7 am, just in case there seemed to be a need/demand.
As it turns out, there are a lot of people needing coffee at 7 am on Saturdays so we will continue opening at 7 am on Saturdays. The only schedule change for this week is that we will be closed on Thursday for Thanksgiving. I'm sure everyone reading this probably made that assumption but, just to be clear.
One final note. I'm excited to be meeting with some folks today at a distillery to discuss a collaboration and the possibility of aging some coffee(s) in bourbon barrels. Who'd a thunk?

I'm back after an amazing trip into Northern California last week. There were a lot of firsts for me, two of which included camping and seeing a part of California I'd not seen before.
I highly recommend a road trip to the Yreka, CA area, heading north up the canyon to Hwy. 96 which follows the Klamath River. The Klamath River was stunningly beautiful and the Trinity Mountains were breathtaking!
But it's back to work and a busy week it has been. We were visited yesterday by Marina Oriel
and Bill Fishbein from The Coffee Trust. Marina has been my contact for setting up the fundraising program in which we're involved, helping raise funds for the coffee farmers of Guatemala in dealing with the LaRoya blight.
Bill is the founder and Executive Director of The Coffee Trust and is in Portland to participate in this weekend's CoffeeFest event, being held at the Oregon Convention Center. One of the things we discussed was scheduling a time when he can return, probably after the first of the year, visit our shop and share the story with our customers, in much greater detail, of what's going on with the coffee crops of Guatemala. This week also marked the opening of the Woodstock location of New Seasons Market. As with all their other stores, our coffee is available there as well. Stop by and check it out. It sounds like an amazing multi-level layout. It's located at 4500 SE Woodstock Blvd., Portland - 97206.
As mentioned a couple weeks ago, the Pumpkin Spiced Lattes have returned with a vengeance. Nothing scary about these. We make the blend right here and as with everything else we offer, it's not syrupy sweet with processed sugars and artificial flavorings. It's just simply delicious.
This weekend marks the end of the season for the St. Johns Farmers Market. And it's looking like the weather is going to be perfect for a farmers market. I hope you'll come out and take advantage of end of the season offerings and stop by our shop while you're in the area.
Beginning next Saturday, October 31st, we are going to return to our "winter" hours. The only thing that will change will be Saturday's opening time, moving back to 8 am. And, just because I'm usually the last one to realize it, the next day, Sunday November 1st is when we go off Daylight Savings Time. I guess the good news is everyone will get an extra hour of sleep.

I hope everyone is enjoying this Autumnal weather. It's the perfect time of year for getting out, going for a hike or bike ride, enjoying the cooler temps with the Autumn colors and of course, enjoying some amazing coffee.

Several weeks ago, I shared a route I'd taken on my motorcycle which I felt was the perfect Autumn day-trip. This past Sunday, I rode over into Washington with a couple friends. We rode up the Klickitat Canyon and on up to Goldendale before heading back to Hwy. 14.
It was a beautiful day with some amazing scenery, a very different landscape from my previously shared route. We saw a lot of people fly fishing in the Klickitat River and saw some wild turkeys. We also witnessed the results of the recent fires. Wow! Thousands and thousands of charred acres coming up all the way to the highways.
Starting next week, we'll be bringing back an old favorite for this time of year. (insert drum roll here), The Pumpkin Spiced Latte! Ingredients have been ordered so as soon as they arrive, we'll be serving them up. Stay tuned.
The new hoodies have proven to be a big hit with folks who are looking for something warm and cozy to fend off these cool morning temps. More t-shirts are also on order and should be here by the middle of October in both men's and women's styles, sporting our new "stylized" logo. And... I've also ordered more of the Mexican pottery.
I've decided to expand our Mexican pottery selection a bit by bringing in more serving platters as well as cream and sugar containers. Hopefully these will all arrive in plenty of time for the holidays.
Recently I had the opportunity to submit some of our coffees into a competition which I'd previously never done. I chose to enter the Pamplona Blend in the organic espresso category. The competition included submissions from over 100 roasters from all over North America. The long and short of it is, the judges loved the Pamplona and we won, for whatever that's worth.
Many of you are familiar with the Pamplona Blend. It's the medium roast espresso blend we serve here in the shop but is also delicious as a pour-over or brewed conventionally. If you haven't had the pleasure of trying it, I would encourage you to do so. It really is delicious. But then, I say that about all our coffees. :)
A couple weeks ago, a customer from Nepal came in the shop and was having coffee. He proceeded to tell me his family is in the process of rebuilding their coffee farm in Nepal and brought a sample of their coffee for me to roast.
I just roasted it on Wednesday and it is very very good. Really well balanced, smooth acidity, nice notes of chocolate and fruit. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to purchase some and be able to offer it.
Look for our special program starting mid-October. We're partnering with Coffee Trust to help support farmers and workers in Guatemala who have been so adversely affected by the "La Roya" blight.
I've previously described this blight, also known as Coffee Rust which has decimated a huge portion of the coffee crops in Central America. It has pushed families, who were already impoverished, over the brink. Some farmers have lost over 75% of their income.
Funds raised will go toward helping 500 farmers gain new skills in effective, organic farming responses to fungal infections like La Roya. More information will be available within the next week so stay tuned. To learn more, click here - http://coffeetrust.org/

A couple weeks ago I mentioned I was "no party planner" and geesh, was that ever the truth. Things for the grand opening/first-year anniversary celebration are coming together nicely but what a busy week it's been.
One of the fun aspects was doing a sampling of various recipes for the coffee martinis. Wow! These are SO GOOD! Dangerously good! Given the fact I'm a former photographer. I think a visual is always important. Solely for illustrations purposes, I just made a batch of the martinis so a photo could be included. Of course, we couldn't waste them so... However, if martinis are not your thing, don't worry. There will be other options as well.
I realized early this morning that there's no way the shop can remain open until 5pm tomorrow and expect to begin the party at 6pm so, we're going to close an hour earlier so we'll have enough time to get everything set up and ready to roll.
By the way, during the hours of the party, we will not be serving espresso beverages, selling coffee beans or anything else. Tomorrow evening is for festivities only. Drip coffee will be available for consumption for anyone who desires but it will be complimentary.
I would like to welcome our newest member to our team. Well, so-to-speak. We upgraded our coffee brewer this past week to try to better keep up with demand for drip coffee during those busy times and it is proving to work splendidly.
We received our new logo hoodies yesterday. They have already proven to be very popular and are perfect for these cool mornings. They're soft and cozy and have a new stylized version of our logo on the back. Pick one up next time you're in. They're only $40.
Another addition has been made to our list of tea offerings. We now have a very delicious jasmine tea available. It's very refreshing; fruity with some very nice floral notes.

As we approach our grand opening celebration next week, things are coming together and it's getting very exciting. The name of the band is Dina y los rumberos who I heard about a year ago at an outdoor festival and felt from the get-go they would provide the festive music I wanted for our grand opening. When we remodeled the shop last year, as with any project of the sort, there were a few lingering things that hadn't been completed. Last week I finally completed the shelves for our selection of pour-over coffees which illustrates the concept of us being all about "options". :) So many coffees, so few days.
As many have experienced, when one goes to sign their name on the iPad finalizing their purchase, it's often a futile attempt at getting anything close to what one's signature really looks like. Recently, a customer took an entirely different approach which I thought you'd enjoy.
In last week's newsletter, I described a beautiful drive to enjoy the autumnal colors of Oregon. I had intended it for either motorcycle travel or car. It would be beautiful either way. However, I received a query about the possibility of organizing a group motorcycle ride of this route, starting with coffee at the shop. I had never considered this but thought it was a great idea so if there are others out there who would enjoy something like this, please let me know and we can try to schedule something.
Warmer temps have returned, at least for this weekend so we'll be prepared with plenty of cold-brewed coffee and teas to help keep you cool. The St. Johns Farmers Market will be taking place again tomorrow and there should be an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as some amazing salmon and sausages.

Cooler temperatures, rain, and an overall autumnal feel have descended upon us. It feels like this is going to be one of those seasons with no transition time at all, going straight from summer-type weather to autumn. All those add up to perfect coffee drinking weather.
For those of you in the Portland, Oregon area, I have a great route to share with you if you're interested in seeing some beautiful countryside. A friend and I took this route on our motorcycles the other evening and it was quite spectacular.
From Portland, take Hwy. 30 north to Scappoose. On the northern most end of Scappoose, turn left onto the Vernonia Hwy. Follow this for a number of miles (I can't remember exactly how far). You'll reach the intersection of Hwy. 47 which if you turn right, will take you to Mist. Turn right toward Mist.
Proceed through Mist and eventually you'll see signs which if you take the right will take you to Clatskanie or if you bear to the left, will take you to Astoria. Follow the road toward Astoria and go several more miles. You'll then reach another intersection (Hwy 103) which will take you to Elsie if you turn left.
Take that left toward Elsie and eventually, you'll reach Hwy. 26 for an easy return to Portland. The whole ride will probably take no more than a couple hours. I found the scenery to be absolutely beautiful and the light at this time of year is sensational.
This week, In addition to brewing inordinate quantities of coffee, we've been busy working on the final details of our upcoming grand opening/first-year anniversary celebration. I've discovered there's a reason I'm not an event planner.
We're hoping to pull off a very festive evening so please make plans to help us celebrate. Saturday, September 19th from 6-10 pm. There will be an assortment of food, beverages (adult and child), and live music. And all I will say is that there will be a minimal amount of coffee served. I'm hoping for great weather so we can spill out onto the sidewalks if necessary. Stay tuned for more details.
We'll be open all weekend as well as Monday (it is Labor Day after all.) So come see us, enjoy some hot or cold-brewed coffees and pastries and enjoy this amazing weather.
